The iPhone 13 and 13 mini are two of the latest iPhone releases, announced by Apple last week. The 5.4 inch iPhone 13 mini is the successor to the iPhone 12 mini, while the 6.1 inch iPhone 13 is the replacement for the iPhone 12. Both of the new iPhone 13 models are nearly identical in design to the iPhone 12 models, featuring flat edges, an aerospace-grade aluminium enclosure, a glass back, and a slight increase in thickness. The iPhone 13 models are available in Pink, Blue, Midnight, Starlight, and (Product)Red.

Some of the main upgrades made this year by Apple are the new A15 chip, powering an increase in performance, incredible upgrades to the iPhones camera system, and all new colours. Below, we break it down.

Pricing and Availability

The iPhone 13 and 13 mini are available to pre-order now from, with the first models arriving this Friday, the 24th of September. We operate on a first come first serve basis, so get your orders in now to avoid disappointment. The iPhone 13 starts at €929, whilst the mini starts at €829.

With the launch of the iPhone 12, Apple did away with the rounded edges that had been used for iPhones since the iPhone 6, instead adopting a flat-sided design with squared off edges, a look that goes back to the iPhone 4 and 5 and is similar to the iPad Pro. Apple is using that same flat-edged look for the entire iPhone 13 lineup. There's an all glass front and a colourful all glass back that's housed in a colour matched aluminium frame. There's a notch on the front display of the iPhone 13 that houses the TrueDepth Camera, speaker, and microphone. There’s also a new diagonal lens set up for the rear camera, which, according to apple, allows for new camera technology such as sensor shift optical image stabilisation.

All of the iPhone 13 models feature an OLED Super Retina XDR display, which is flexible and extends right into the chassis of each device. The screen emits up to 1200 nits of peak brightness for HDR photos, videos, TV shows, and movies. The 5.4 inch iPhone 13 mini has a resolution of 2340 x 1080, with 476 pixels per inch, and the 6.1 inch iPhone 13 features a resolution of 2532 x 1170, with 460 pixels per inch. All in all we found the iPhone 13 screen to be bright and vibrant, and amazing to view your photo albums or watch your favourite Netflix series on.

Ceramic Shield

The ‘Ceramic Shield’ material used in iPhone screens is again a feature, giving users much better drop protection for their iPhone. According to Apple, Ceramic Shield is tougher than any other smartphone glass material, against not just drops, but also scratches and day to day use.

The iPhone 13 and 13 mini are available in more of the standard colours associated with iPhones, as well as a select group of new colours. The complete list of colours available are: Pink, Blue, Starlight, Midnight and Product(Red).

Water Resistance

The iPhone 13 and 13 mini have an IP68 Water resistance rating, similar to the previous generation. What this means is that, in water, they are able to withstand a depth of up to six meters for up to 30 minutes. They also have the highest dust resistance rating that exists. However, these resistance ratings are not permanent, and can deteriorate over time, and that’s why we recommend water proof cases and screen protectors for added protection.

A15 Chip

All of the iPhone 13 models use Apple's new A15 bionic chip, which offers performance and efficiency improvements over the A14 chip used in the iPhone 12. When it comes to the CPU, the iPhone 13 models are approximately 10% faster in single-core performance and approximately 18% faster in multi-core performance compared to the iPhone 12 models. This means wether your simply loading an email, or completing more complex tasks, you should see a noticeable uptake in processing speeds.

Camera Upgrades

A new 12 megapixel camera system with True Depth is installed on the front facing camera, allowing for crystal clear selfies and front facing video. With the A15 chip, the iPhone 13 models support many of the photographic capabilities that are available with the rear cameras, including Night mode for selfies, Dolby Vision HDR recording, and Deep Fusion, along with ProRes and the new Cinematic Mode for capturing videos with movie-like depth of field changes.

The ‌iPhone 13‌ and 13 mini include a diagonal dual-lens camera system. The updated Ultra Wide camera offers better low light performance, and the updated Wide camera lets in 47 percent more light. The iPhone 13 models support up to 4K video recording at up to 60 frames per second, and HDR video recording with Dolby Vision at 4K. 1080p video recording is also available. There's a new Cinematic Mode that uses rack focus to seamlessly shift the focus from one subject to another when capturing video. It holds focus on the subject while blurring the background, and can automatically change the focus when a new subject is about to enter the scene. This is one of our favourite features, and it allows us to turn home movies into box office quality videos.

Battery Life

Apple has improved battery life across the iPhone 13 lineup with the A15 chip’s improved efficiency and larger battery sizes. The ‌iPhone 13‌ mini's battery lasts for up to 1.5 hours longer than the iPhone 12 mini, and the ‌iPhone 13‌'s battery lasts for up to 2.5 hours than the iPhone 12. The iPhone 13 mini supports up to 17 hours of video playback, and up to 55 hours of audio playback. The iPhone 13 supports up to 19 hours of video playback, and up to 75 hours of audio playback. Both iPhone 13 models support fast charging and can charge to 50 percent within 30 minutes using a Lightning to USB-C cable and a 20W power adapter. This could be our favourite upgrade of them all, with battery capacity to last all day, and super fast charging when you need it most.
